Tom Green - Udder Insanity

Blaaaahggghh
How could a biography on the funniest person in the world be udderly terrible rather than udderly insane?! By writing a terribly contradictory unauthorized biography with basically no quotes and possible inaccurate information. Also assumption of Tom going hollywood! This Book Blows

It was a very good book for fans of the canadian episodes!
The book was very good...but I would have wished they could have had more on the MTV shows. I found the partes on his childhood very interestcing though. Also it didn't mention his testicluar cancer which was one of the most inportant events in his life...guess they didn't get it dont in time. But a great book for any Tom Green fan!

The tom greene review
one of the best books i have read with real life events. you do not have to be a tom greene fan to like this book. all you need to know is how to read and have a good sense of humor(and if you don't have one this book will get you on the right track). this book is filled with interesting facts on tom and his family.and i highly reccomend this book

The Water's End

SURF YES STORY NO
Chris H. obviously has a deep love for surfing and knows how to get da kine across.Swell.where's the sunburn?where's the real Mexico?

I Loved It
This book made me want to grab my backpack and surfboard and head off into the great unknown. The scenes of Mexico and the Pacific are beautiful. I'm still thinking about it days later.

A Great Debut Novel
Christopher Hawkins' first novel is a wonderful surprise. The beautifully descriptive story places you in Coastal Mexico, where you can practically taste the salt water and feel the sun beating down. Surfing is central to the story, but you do not have to be a surfer to appreciate the relationship of man and ocean. Hawkins describes the sensation of surfing so well, that you will believe you have done it yourself. Most importantly, however, the story grips you from the very first page. It has a refreshing lack of violence, yet still manages suspense and tension to the end. You will find yourself effortlessly immersed in the characters as you turn the pages to find out their fate.

Beating Burnout : Balanced Living for Busy People : How to Beat Burnout, Before Burnout
Published in Hardcover by Budget Book Service (February, 1997)
Authors: Frank B. Minirth, Paul Meier, Don Hawkins, and Rich Flournoy
Average review score:

Tedious for those not reading the Bible daily
Your view of this book is likely to depend on your religious outlook on life. The book is full of Bible-Quotes. It uses biblical personalities and settings as examples for burnout and the things that bring burnout about. Of those examples that do not figure biblical personalities, at least half have some strong connection to the church.

Personally, I feel that a book that deals with a clinical psychological issue, such as burnout, should rely on academic research and reasoning. That is missing here. Time and again the bible is taken as the source of all truth and the author's interpretation as our guiding line for doing things in life. Especially the latter makes it very difficult reading for people with academic training who are used to take a critical view of unsubstantiated statements.

For Christians facing burnout, this is must reading.
This book is practical, readable, and worthwhile. Even if you're so burned out you can hardly face another book, this one is worth the time! Lots of case histories and real life examples, so you know the authors have dealt with real people. Very solid biblical foundation. Non-technical explanations make it easy reading for anyone. Solid, practical suggestions for avoiding or escaping burnout. This is two books put together in one volume. Reading this book helped me identify the strengths and weaknesses, as well as the potential hazards of my own personality type. Best book on the subject I've seen.

Beneath the Stone: The Story of Masonic Secrecy
Published in Paperback by Worldcomm Pr (April, 1999)
Authors: C. Bruce Hunter and Phil Hawkins
Average review score:

Confusing sort of ramble....
I'm not a mason, but over the last several months I have had the opportunity to read several books on Freemasonry. C. Bruce Hunter's is *not* one of the better ones. It seems to be a disjointed book making questionble connections in history and passing over some key points. It's not a pro/anti- mason book - but for those looking for a good book on the history and background of freemasonry - you'd be better served by reading something like Robinson's Born in Blood.....

A Long Time Mason
I am a long time mason -- in fact I was Master of my Lodge 20 years ago in a Colonial Lodge. Even with this backgtround and being fairly well read in masonic matters, I found this book a very interesting insite into the part of Masonic History shrouded in the dust of time. While many of its conclusions are speculative, they are founded on the thin facts we actually have on the origin of the craft. I was very sorry to see that it is currently out of print. We are currently confering the degrees on a class of 6 and I wished to purchase copies for each of them. The copy I have was purchased by my wife when she visited the Geo W. Memorial -- perhaps they might have a few copies left.

There is Someone Out There

Where Did This Writer Come From, Mars?
As in the book description states: Billions of beings congrfolling tghe universe will make themselves known to earths inhabitants beginning [this year, 1997.] This is 1999 and NU? Did we miss something with Hale Bopp Comet and the other nutz who killed themselves to get on the space ship. I must have been in a coma. The writer also. I only read what's printed in Amazon.com reviews. "Hollywood" must still be sucking weeds.

Star Trek is fiction, this book is not!
WOW! Heavy reading. It's brain food. I have studied it twice and changed my mind about a lot of thigs like the subconscious, UFO's and the like. Any reader interested in outer space and the future of this planet will really enjoy the revelations of facts put forth in this book.

Are these beings related to the growing violence?
I am talking about the growing iniquity and violence in the world. The terrorist attacks upon America, and the whole world where there are so many Gods (these beings that made their apperance since 1997 in subtle and various ways. They are worshipped as Lord, God, Lucifer, Jesus, and etc. Now September 11, 2001 seems to correlate with this Book and the other Yisrayl Hawkins' book called "The End" which I recommend. This book states that these beings are influencing mankind to commit violence and more acts of infidelity, adultery/fornication and treason against one another until there is a point when mankind realizes that there is SOMEONE out there. SOMEONE Who cares about our welfare. This SOMEONE desires to stop us from destroying ourselves completely because of our PRIDE! PRIDE: The characteristic of a God or Demon.

Apache Web Server Administration and e-Commerce Handbook (With CD-ROM)
Published in Paperback by Prentice Hall PTR (08 December, 2000)
Author: Scott Hawkins
Average review score:

use the web
This book tries to cover so many things it ends up covering nothing. Apache is addressed on Unix, Linux, Windows, and Mac platforms giving no depth to any single one. Literally half the book is appendices with some covering things like TCP/IP concepts and network troubleshooting. It's all over the map. No focus or usefulness.

The e-commerce section (the reason I bought the book) is a joke. Only 30 pages with 20 of them devoted to a sample site using PHP.

There are a lot of pages on the Web that do a much better, more focused, job of covering this material and it won't cost you anything. Rarely have I ever been this disappointed in a book.

My review, as submitted to my University as an Assignment.
Apache Web Server is the foremost application in its field, having over 60% of the Web Server market. Hawkins' book aims to be both a tutorial and reference in its chosen subject, and to provide the reader with sufficient information and software (on the enclosed CD) to configure and host an E-Commerce web site with Apache...He regularly extols the virtues of open-source software, particularly within the context of a web server, considering that this provides a greater degree of configurability than that of closed-book software. The book is very pleasant to read and handle, is well laid out and facilitates easy referencing. There are three main sections: Basic Concepts; Administration and E-Commerce, each of which is divided into logically organised chapters. Section One covers the basics, explaining Apaches' numerous directives (configuration options), modules, installation procedures (for Unix/Linux, Mac and Windows) and control methods. Section One gives the reader the means to install and configure a basic Web server. The text is very easy to follow, with clear, bold, sequentially numbered headings to the various subdivisions within chapters, enabling the reader to easily flick back and forth through the text to reference what he or she will. The use of courier fonts for command line directives seems logical. An explanation of the terminology used, exhaustively, in later sections of the book is a welcome benefit.

Section Two covers Administration and explains clearly and concisely the extensive number and variety of configuration options and modules available to the reader; virtual hosting, proxies, SSL and database integration to name but a few. Database integration is covered extensively, largely covering MySQL, but Oracle and Informix are covered too. Security is dealt with in extensive detail, an important inclusion, demonstrating the use of SSL (Secure Socket Layer), and its history (there is a lot of interesting historical detail throughout the book). An essential consideration for an E-Commerce site. Other topics are included, such as Dynamic Content with SSI (Server Side Includes), DHTML, url rewriting and performance tuning. The final chapter is brief and discusses the use of Perl and C programming languages to construct Apache modules, referring the user to: Writing Apache Modules with Perl and C by Lincoln Stein and Doug MacEachern [1]. The author refers to pe! rl as the preferred programming language for use with Apache, as mod_Perl was specifically designed for use with Apache, giving far superior performance and ease of use than ?C?.

The final section of the book is rather more of a disappointment. Although the CDROM includes software enabling the user to create a sample E-Commerce site, the topic is covered all too briefly in the book, only three chapters; money collection, database integration and construction of a sample site. The latter is a welcome inclusion, easy to follow and concise. The former are not much help at all, perhaps making money is an alien concept to a friend of the Open Source movement. The author extols the virtues of database interaction using (open source) My_SQL and PHP (Personal Hypertext Pre-processor), rather than the more commercially acceptable Oracle and Cold Fusion. This route would save the reader a nice four figure sum of money, an obvious advantage in a first E-Commerce venture.

The final part of the book is 180 pages of appendices, covering a variety of networking and programming topics to assist the reader in creation of a sample E-Commerce site. Syntax, sample code and detailed instruction are covered more than adequately and very clearly.

Overall, I would consider this an excellent book for a novice intending to create his/her first E-Commerce site, let down only by its lack of detail involving E-Commerce. The book might seem expensive for a paperback, but the inclusion of all the necessary software softens the blow, especially when one considers that the commercial equivalents would cost the reader several thousands of pounds. The book is organised well, omitting most of the code/configuration detail and general techie stuff from the general text, leaving the appendices to act as reference. The appendices are equally logical.

Recommended.

Australia: Four Inspirational Love Stories from the Land Down Under
Published in Paperback by Barbour & Co (January, 2000)
Author: Mary Hawkins
Average review score:

Not a very good book
I read a lot of books Christian and otherwise and I have to say this is one of the worst books I've read in a long time. Actally since I started this book over a month ago I have put it down and read 4 other books in between. I just didn't feel that it was a well written book. When the author was describing how the characters reacted to a situation or comment from another character she was very redundant. It seems like everyone was giving Sharp looks and Piercing glances it just didn't make the characters seem real made them all seem alike.

I'm still not done with the book only about 50 pages left, I don't like to leave a book unread once I start it not even a poorly written one. I will be glad when I can finally close the chaper on this one.

This book's a winner!!! From Deborah Embree, Nashville...
Australia with Four Inspirational Love Stories From Down Under joins hearts and hands of a family as each novel reveals more and more about this particular group of relatives. While recovering from a tragic car accident that kills her fiance and family, Gail finds another path with Jim. Hillie finds love and her roots at the same time with nice pastor Rance Telford. Beth and Arthur find their love for one another only grows after he becomes crippled in a wheelchair and must rely on her for moral, spiritual and family support. Last but not least Aunt Jean, the
persevering nurse who cares for all, finds Christmas happiness with an old flame. I enjoyed this book and feel lucky to have read it! Australia is the perfect backdrop for these lovely stories!

Eddy Merckx: The Greatest Cyclist of the 20th Century
Published in Paperback by Velo Press (March, 2000)
Authors: Rik Vanwalleghem, Rik Van Walleghem, and Steven Hawkins
Average review score:

Subject-FASCINATING, Author-AWEFUL
Total agreement with the first 4 reviewers. Van Welleghem should not be writing, and if he has an editor, the editor should find another occupation. Eddy Mercxx was an idol of mine as a teenager, and still inspires my riding and racing today, several decades later. Unfortunately, this book is very poorly written--utterly repetitious, without inspiration or insight--it's making a fascinating subject a chore to explore.

Eddy Merckx: The Dullest Cyclist of the 20th Century?
Don't get me wrong: in cycling terms, Eddy Merckx is and will be the greatest rider who ever lived (Jeannie Longo another candidate, arguably). It is impossible to imagine anyone else being able to win 30% of the races he entered in a sport where just finishing is often a big deal, let alone owning the yellow, green and polka dot jerseys at the end of a single Tour de France. Eddy Merckx was a prodigious talent but, judging from this book, an astonishingly dull person. The author concentrates on Merckx the man rather than the racer and we find a lower-middle class Belgian with no schooling, no outside interests and a tendency towards complete silence. At the end of this poorly-structured and repetitive book, we feel nothing about the great dramas of the Cannibal's sporting life, his motivitations, his training methods. It seems he got on his bike, won the race and got off. Nothing heroic about any of this yet Merckx rode some of the most dramatic bike races ever.

The definitive Merckx book remains to be written. Save your money until then.

Eddy Merckx
It's a shame that Rik Van Walleghem's abilities as a writer fall so far short of Eddy Merckx's brilliance on a bicycle. This book is flabby, repetitive, poorly edited and, in the end, not very informative. The only other book I have read on bicycle racing is the equally dismal An Intimate Portrait of The Tour de France by Phillippe Brunel. In my experience, cyclists aren't stupid. They deserve better than this.

Goddess Worship, Witchcraft and Neo-Paganism
Published in Paperback by Zondervan (01 March, 1998)
Authors: Craig Hawkins and Alan W. Gomes
Average review score:

Brief, but difficult to wade through...
It is plain that Craig Hawkins' book was written for classroom/educational purposes. He obviously knows his stuff from his own personal Protestant Christian tradition; however, I found his book extremely difficult to plod through. His book is laid out in an outline format which keeps the text from flowing. One must read each heading and listed neo-pagan claim countered by a Protestant Christian rebuttal. The result is dry reading in spite of his thorough research and goodly amount of helpful information.

If one doesn't mind this type of format, his book is full of valuable information. I personally prefer a flowing prose format which more naturally connects each section of the book.

This book is filled with errors
I guess for anyone who wants their beliefs reiterated back to them it is a great book. Though for people who like the truth so they can think for themselves will find this book lacking. Please do not read this book if you are actually interested in actually learning about Paganism either for knowledge or interest. I would suggest something that was not made by a Christian or Pagan group but by some non-biased third party.

a needed discussion
this book is a needed discussion of the incompatibility of Paganism with Christian faith. It seems obvious, but I noticed that many Christians get confused by the "healing" claims of New Age movements, which are clearly pagan, and as such very dangerous.

A related book well worth reading (which can be found on Amazon) is:Mark Albrecht, Reincarnation: A Christian Critique of a New Age Doctrine (Chicago: InterVarsity Press, 1982, 1987)

I wish John F Macarthur had written on the same subject, given his usual clarity.

may the Lord keep your faith!

Accounting:Text and Cases
Published in Hardcover by McGraw-Hill/Irwin (20 October, 1998)
Authors: Robert Newton Anthony, David F. Hawkins, and Kenneth A. Merchant
Average review score:

This one will make you pull your hair out!
Unless you go to Haaaaarvaaard (I always forget how many A's to put), you are probably going to be a bit perplexed by the content of this book.

The cases go WAY beyond what is covered in the Chapters, and its up to the instructor to try to fill in the gaps (hopefully your instructor realizes this).

I have found myself referring to my textbook from my intro accounting course more often than this book itself in order to grasp the concepts at hand. Seriously, this book is a punishment to anyone who has to buy it for school. And its FREAKIN heavy to haul around across campus.

'Nough said.

Too dense.
I used this book for my MBA and found it to be lengthy and dense. One would be lost if he has no basic accounting knowledge. I spent more time looking up other books in the book shop for my revision.

A Heavy Book
It's not that bad as other reviews say it is, but it is definetely such a heavy book to carry around.
